PROJECT.30 - DAY 28

Reacting to Another Creative’s Work

Hey, welcome to Day 28. We’re closing it up.

So today is react to someone’s work. And I want to plug you to a guy called Michel-Ange (Meklonch) Makombe Byaterena.

Okay, that sounds like I’m doing a commercial. But Michel-Ange (Meklonch) is a creative, a graphics designer or visual designer. And his focus is on fast moving commercial goods, lifestyle brands. In simple terms, alcohol. But he has mostly done alcohol because he has been doing Ecuador for a while. But his portfolio has a couple of other work as well.

A Style You Can Recognize

One thing I’ve realized with him is he likes copy that’s small. So for example, I’ll write into this PDF. This is nice. But then for me, I think I would make this a little bit much bigger. Maybe cover the product. Put it like around here. But it would be much bigger.

I don’t know what’s going on, but yeah, it would be much bigger. I think let’s just stick to that.

Definitely, he likes a lot of negative space. One thing I’ve noticed is there’s like a lot of negative space in his work. Which is a unique style. Because now I can always tell that this is a Michel-Ange (Meklonch) kind of work.

And I believe it’s really intentional. We’ll have that conversation when we get there. But yeah, he has a lot of negative space to his work. And you’re going to see it in a lot of his work.

But he’s the guy behind all these things you’ve probably seen.

My Personal Take

He needs to update some of these because he has done more work lately. Now we are just going to admire his work. And as you can see, you can do Waragi, Tusker Lite. He has done a lot of this. And as you can see, negative space.

We worked on this together, but more from me as more from a content direction point of view. And he’s the one who makes the direction make sense. Honored to work with him on this.

Beyond Campaign Work

Brands. Merchandise. I don’t have a lot to say about this because they all look dope. I’m glad I have a couple of Smirnoff merchandise that he designed. Dope looking.

Mandem has done a lot of logos. I can’t comment because I can’t do these things. So guys, I’m just saying wow. You know those reaction videos of, yeah. So this is just more like plugging you.

Digital drawings. He has amazing digital drawings. And I think if you go to his Instagram, if I could manage to pull it up a little bit here so that you guys can see, he has been doing this 30 day project together as well. And he has a couple of good work on his Instagram.

The 30 Day Challenge

These are all from the 30 day challenge that we have been doing. Most of them. If you count them backwards, you will see where he started with this. You know, Project.30, Day 8 out of 30. As you can see, I think we start here. Day 3. Yeah, it was here. Welcome back, Day 1 out of 30.

And he has been cooking on this thing as Kanzen Lotus.

So go check out Kanzen Lotus. He has done a couple of motion graphics. Probably on his Instagram. The portfolio is there. You can go and see them.

Final Thoughts

Some people make good designs. Others build recognizable visual identities through their work.

Michel-Ange (Meklonch) sits somewhere in that second category.

One thing I immediately notice in his work is his use of negative space. A lot of designers try to fill every inch of the canvas, but he seems comfortable letting the design breathe. There’s space around the product. Space around the text. Space for the viewer’s eye to rest.

That restraint becomes a signature. When you see enough of his pieces, you start recognizing them instantly. That’s usually a sign of intentional design language.

If you’re curious to explore his work, you can check out his creative identity Kanzen Lotus and browse through the projects he has been building.

His contact is right here. Don’t say I didn’t plug you. Go check him out.

That has been Day 28. Catch you on Day 29. Kiromo, yeah yeah, booyaka.
